Jazz Ensemble is a group of musicians selected through an audition process to participate in the exploration of the jazz styles of music. The Jazz Ensemble studies the only uniquely American art form, jazz music. Particular emphasis is placed on developing skills in improvisation and ensemble skills.
Various styles of jazz music are studied including swing, blues, funk and Latin jazz. Not only will we perform jazz music but also study the history of jazz through listening and discussion. The course is co-curricular, including participation in concerts, clinics, festivals and concerts during & outside the school day. Jazz ensemble members will be chosen and placed by an audition process during the first weeks of school. The audition will include scales, a prepared Jazz Piece, and sight-reading.
The prerequisites for Jazz I are enrollment in private lessons for jazz and enrollment in a curricular performing ensemble. Due to the amount of opportunities these students are granted, a participation contribution is accepted.
